Debt situation of developing countries

Many countries exceed threshold indicators jointly developed by the IMF and the World Bank for analyses of low-income-country debt sustainability.

 

While the overall debt situation of low and middle-income countries remains relatively benign, the averages mask rapid debt build-up in a number of countries. Assessing debt sustainability through aggregate indicators can conceal risks in individual countries (see also section on ‘Countries at risk of debt distress’ below).
